Is there any way to get free cdl training in the trucking industry? The first thing that you need to know is that there is no such thing as free cdl training. It might sound like it’s free but if you read the fine print you will find out otherwise.
There is always an agreement associated with any type of free cdl training. The only real free cdl training is obtained by a state or federal grant for those who qualify. Usually you have to be unemployed for a period of time along with other qualifying factors to be eligible.
Trucking company cdl schools sometimes advertise free cdl training or company sponsored paid cdl training. They usually pay for the cost of your training as long as you pass their school and sign a contract to work for them for an specific amount of time. The problem with this can be if they let you go or dismiss you a couple weeks into the training. Your free cdl training company is now billing you for a thousand dollars or more and you didn’t even get a cdl!
Read the contracts and you will see that, if you are not passing the training, you will be responsible for all or part of the cost of the cdl training. If you pass the trucking school you are now obligated to work for that trucking company for a year at low trucking wages. If you leave early you will be responsible for the cost of the supposed free cdl training plus interest.
Choosing to go to a private cdl training school can be the best option. A good independent trucking school will have job placement that offer tuition repayment packages paid over the amount of time you work for that company. This can be your best bet giving you more options on where you want to work. Be cautious when offered free cdl training!
